1. According to an ASCD survey, 32.34% of teacher would like additional taxpayer dollars to support a reduction in class size, and 8.56% want an increase in teacher pay. Only 2.64% want to see an increase in school security.
  2. According to a Gallup Student Poll, almost 80% of elementary students qualify as being fully engaged; by middle school that number drops to 60%, and by high school, it’s down to 40%.
  3. More than 48,000 applied for 5,800 Teach for America positions.
  4. From the 1999-2000 to 2007-08 school year, the percentage of freshmen needing remedial courses dropped from 26.3% to 20.4%, with 19.9% of white students, 30.2% of black students, and 29% of Hispanics needing such remediation.
  5. About 75% of never-suspended Florida 9th graders graduated from high school vs. a 52% graduation rate for those suspended once and a 38% rate for those suspended twice.
