1. An AdoptAClassroom.org survey found that 91% of teachers buy basic supplies for their students. 67% buy food and snacks; 30% buy warm outerwear, and 29% buy such items as soap and toilet paper.
  2. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 21% of those 18 and younger live in poverty, and 11% of children between 6 and 18 live in a household where neither parent has at least a high school diploma or GED.
