1. 372 districts applied, 61 were chosen as finalists, and now 16 have been named winners of the latest, open-to-districts Race to the Top competition (RTTT); each will receive between $5 million and $40 million.
  2. In this latest RTTT district competition, as little as one point on a 210-point scale separated the 16th winning application from the two that tied for 17th place and lost out.
  3. The U.S. Department of Education’s $133 million RTTT Early Learning Challenge competition has been won by Colorado, Illinois, New Mexico, Oregon, and Wisconsin. There five were runners-up in last year’s competition which was won by nine other states.
  4. Graduation rates are lower-than-average for blacks in every state and for Latino students in all but Maine.
  5. California’s request for a No Child Left Behind waiver has been denied.
